If Hainan Faces Typhoons, Heat and Humidity… Why Would Anyone Open an Office here?
In the first episode of Visions on the Hainan Free Trade Port, we explored why Hainan is becoming an increasingly important testing ground for the products and services.
Automobile manufacturers bring their latest vehicles to Hainan because the island offers something unique: extreme environmental conditions.
High temperatures. Intense humidity. Salt-laden coastal air. Heavy rainfall. Typhoons.
These are exactly the conditions engineers need to test whether a product or service can perform reliably before it reaches customers around the world.
After watching that episode, many people might ask a very reasonable question:
If Hainan’s climate is so challenging, why would anyone choose to live here, let alone start a business?
The answer is simple.
Because when you look beyond the weather, you begin to see something much bigger.
Every Opportunity Comes With Challenges
History shows us that the world’s most dynamic regions have rarely been the easiest places to live.
Singapore has tropical humidity.
Dubai has extreme heat.
Silicon Valley has earthquakes.
The Netherlands constantly manages rising sea levels.
Successful regions do not become successful because they have no challenges. They become successful because they learn how to manage them better than others.
Hainan is no different.
Building for the Long Term
When we decided to establish our regional office in Hainan, the decision wasn’t based on the weather.
It was based on the long-term vision.
The Hainan Free Trade Port represents one of China’s most ambitious economic development strategies. The focus is on creating an internationally connected economy with policies designed to encourage trade, investment, innovation, and international cooperation.
As we are working in ESG, sustainability, and international business, that vision resonated with us.
Climate Is Not Only a Risk; It Is Also an Opportunity
Living in Hainan also means experiencing firsthand many of the realities that climate scientists have discussed for years.
Extreme rainfall.
High temperatures.
Powerful storms.
For some people, these are reasons to stay away.
For us, they reinforce why sustainability matters.
Climate adaptation is no longer a theoretical discussion. It influences how we design buildings, develop infrastructure, manage water resources, produce energy, and build resilient supply chains.
Hainan is becoming a place where many of these solutions can be developed and tested.
A Different Perspective
Moving to China changed how our founder and CEO thinks about long-term planning.
One thing that has impressed Mrs. Carron is the willingness to think in decades rather than quarters. Large infrastructure projects, transport systems, renewable energy investments, and industrial development are often planned with a long horizon in mind.
As we advise companies on ESG strategy, we believe this kind of long-term thinking is increasingly valuable.
Businesses that focus only on today’s challenges often struggle with tomorrow’s realities.
For Us, Hainan represents more than a tropical island.
It represents innovation.
International collaboration.
A willingness to experiment.
And the opportunity to be part of a region that is still writing its story.
Looking Ahead
No place is perfect.
Every country and every region has its strengths and its challenges.
The question is not whether challenges exist.
The real question is:
